John B Wheelock, MD

Gynecologic Oncology
Dr. John Wheelock was born in St. Johnsbury, Vt. He attended the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. After his undergraduate training, he went to Tulane Medical School in New Orleans, La. He went on to Keesler Air Force Base, Biloxi, Miss. for his residency in obstetrics and gynecology. After completing his residency, he was trained in the subspecialty of gynecologic oncology at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, Va. In 1985, he became a diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and in 1987 he received his subspecialty certification in gynecologic oncology. He voluntarily maintains his gynecologic oncology certification on an annual basis. Dr. Wheelock started his practice of gynecologic oncology at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Miss. from 1984 through 1991. During that time, he was the head of the division of gynecologic oncology and became the chairman of the department of obstetrics and gynecology and residency program director. In 1991, he went into private practice at Baptist Hospital in Nashville, Tenn. In 1999, he became the head of the division of gynecologic oncology and the vice chairman of the department of obstetrics and gynecology at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, Va. In 2002, he returned to private practice with Dr. Laura Williams at Baptist Hospital. He has a clinical faculty appointment with Vanderbilt's department of obstetrics and gynecology. During his tenure at the Medical College of Virginia and at Vanderbilt, Dr. Wheelock has received numerous teaching awards from their residency program and from the medical school. He has authored more than 50 scientific publications. Dr. Wheelock is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists, the American Society of Clinical Oncologists, Nashville Academy of Medicine, Davidson County Medical Society, Nashville OB/GYN Society and he is named as a DaVinci Robot® surgical provider by Intuitive Surgical. Dr. Wheelock is married with four children. In his free time, he and his wife, Margee, are actively involved in the raising of their children and their many sports activities. Dr. Wheelock enjoys golf and wine collecting.
